Feminism is not an option. It is as integral to society as air to our lungs.
With the decades, even centuries of the battle for equal rights in society, it is essential to take a step back and remember and celebrate the legacy of all the women who stood up to oppressive society and put themselves upfront so the women of today could have fulfilling lives, free of injustice and inequality.
Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s vital roles and contributions to American history. This month, Allison Academy students expressed how the world sees women by participating in various activities that focused on putting a spotlight on women’s struggles and accomplishments throughout history.
A time to honor the depth and power of female history
Women’s History Month at our school is a time to celebrate both the women throughout history who made a difference and to honor everything that being a woman means today.
At Allison Academy, we always encourage all our students to be socially aware and to actively foster the values we encourage at our school, gender equality being one of the things that are considered a default value today.
Our students have made this possible by sharing their powerful and moving poems about what it means to be a woman, the kinds of issues women still face today, and the evergoing battle for equality. Some of the most inspiring speeches were about empowerment, affirming the qualities of modern women, who defy the pressure put on them by outdated standards.
Being a girl in contemporary society is still a challenge, even though a lot of things have improved in terms of equality. We are proud to say that our students have shown a great understanding of the issues women faced while carving their names into the history of art, science, politics, and overall existence.
The girls who claimed their place in history
Women’s History Month was officially created back in 1987, but its heritage goes back even further than that, starting with suffragists fighting for women to get the right to vote in the early 20th century. This was just the beginning of the whole movement of female fighters for social justice, who paved the way for generations of women in the future to have better lives and be free of societal chains.
By doing various projects and creative tasks this month, we remember the examples of female courage who stand up for the rights of women in the future and create a society of opportunities and freedoms we have today.
Women’s History Month is also a time to celebrate women who make a difference in your life: it could be your mom, grandmother, sister, teacher, a friend, or basically, any woman who you feel has an impact on how you live.
This month, we remind ourselves and the world: without the efforts of generations of women before us, who knows if these influential women in our lives would have had the opportunity to be as awesome as they are?
